Home Education
Choosing to educate your child at home is a significant commitment. My tutoring service is designed to provide the academic rigor, safeguarding, and administrative evidence required to satisfy UK Department for Education (DfE) and Local Authority (LA) standards.
1. Meeting the "Efficient and Suitable" Requirement
Section 7 of the Education Act 1996 requires home education to be suitable to the child’s "age, ability, and aptitude."
• Tailored Curriculum: While you aren't required to follow the National Curriculum, I can provide a structured framework that ensures no learning gaps.
• Measurable Progress: We provide regular progress reports. These are vital if your Local Authority makes an "informal enquiry" or requests evidence of the education being provided.
• SEN Support: If your child has an EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan), I work specifically to meet the outcomes outlined in that plan, ensuring the LA remains satisfied that the child's needs are being met outside of a school setting.
2. Navigating the 2026 "Children Not in School" Registers
With the introduction of the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill, Local Authorities now maintain mandatory registers of home-educated children.
• Registration Support: I assist parents in providing the necessary educational details for these registers.
• Professional Validation: Having a professional tutor involved in your child’s education adds a layer of "independent validation" that can help streamline interactions with LA elective home education officers.
3. Rigorous Safeguarding & Peace of Mind
Government guidance strongly advises parents to vet any private tutors. I exceed these recommendations by ensuring:
• I complete all the necessary KCSIE (Keeping Children Safe in Education) training requirements each year.
• Safe Learning Environment: Whether online or in-person, I adhere to strict safeguarding protocols, including neutral backgrounds for online sessions and transparent communication channels with parents.
4. Flexibility and Full-Time Equivalency
The law does not define "full-time" as 25 hours a week for home schooling, as one-to-one tuition is significantly more intensive than a classroom.
• Efficiency: I maximize learning time, allowing your child to cover more ground in fewer hours.
• Flexibility: I can work around your family’s schedule, providing the "otherwise" in the legal phrase "at school or otherwise.
